Buns, bilbies, and brews – celebrate Easter by supporting SA’s local makers and producers. Here’s your guide to the best hot cross buns, creative chocolates, and quirky local treats.

Easter’s almost here, and it’s the perfect excuse to support South Australian makers and local businesses.

When you Buy SA. For SA. it’s not only good for your community – it tastes great too. From award-winning hot cross buns (HCBs) to quirky chocolates and beyond, here’s your guide to celebrating Easter the SA way.

Larry Lamington shows off the Kytons’ FruChoc hot cross buns.

Adelaide’s top hot cross buns

Kytons Bakery (Edwardstown and across Adelaide)
Two SA legends collide – Kytons’ FruChocs hot cross buns mix fruity apricot and peach centres with chocolate. They also do vegan-friendly traditional and fruitless buns – you’ll find the whole range at Drakes, IGA and Foodland.

Banana Boogie Bakery (Belair and North Plympton)
Award-winning, fluffy traditional buns. Or try the indulgent “Hot X Doughies” – custard-filled, doughnut-style treats dusted in cinnamon sugar.

The Lost Loaf (Bowden)
Artisan sourdough buns loaded with figs, apricots, currants, or indulgent chocolate – chewy, tangy, and addictive. This small bakery has a big reputation, so order ahead!

Orange Spot Bakery (Glenelg)
Famous for its award-winning traditional hot cross buns – soft, spiced, and packed with fruit, making it a local Easter essential.

Perryman’s Artisan Bakery (North Adelaide)
Traditional buns, sourdough spiced buns, choc-chip buns, gingerbread Easter bunnies, and chocolate egg nest cupcakes – Easter sorted.

Perryman’s hot cross buns.

Also awesome in Adelaide!

Want more HCB deliciousness? Try: Dough (Central Market), Bakery on O’Connell (North Adelaide), Home Grain Bakery (Aldinga), Beck’s Bakehouse (Port Noarlunga), Bottega Bandito (Prospect & James Place), Food For You Especially Gluten Free Bakery (Walkerville) and Rosie’s Rise (Woodville South).

Hot cross buns from Apex Bakery in the Barossa Valley.

Heading regional?

If you’re road-tripping this Easter we’ve got you covered: Swing by Port Elliot Bakery (Fleurieu Peninsula) for buns worth lining up for, or Otto’s Bakery (Hahndorf) and Lobethal Bakery for Hills classics.

Wine tasting? Apex Bakery (Tanunda) and Clare Rise Bakery 1895 (Clare) pair perfectly with your cellar door stops.

Further afield, try Rabbit Warren Bakery on Kangaroo Island, Five Loaves Bakery in Cummins (Eyre Peninsula), Minlaton Bakery (Yorke Peninsula), or Julia’s Kitchen at The Old Bakery (Wirrabara, Flinders Ranges).

On the Limestone Coast, locals love Pick Ave Bakery (Mount Gambier) and Windara Bakery (Penola).

Murray River faves include The Country Bakehouse (Loxton) and Waikerie Bakery, home of cute honey bunny biscuits and Easter meringue nests stuffed with chocolate eggs.

Haigh’s Chocolates are an SA favourite.

SA’s chocolate legends

Haigh’s Chocolates (Parkside and across Adelaide)
SA chocolate royalty – rich milk, dark, and white eggs, plus iconic bilbies supporting Rabbit-Free Australia. Don’t miss their half-shell eggs filled with milk chocolate speckles or their spiced hot cross bun truffles.

Menz (Glynde and across Adelaide)
Another local icon, Menz brings SA nostalgia to Easter with FruChocs eggs (exclusively at Menz stores), Violet Crumble honeycomb treats, and Polly Waffle marshmallow-filled bunnies at Drakes, IGA and Foodland supermarkets.

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company’s Easter offerings.

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company (Tanunda)
Handcrafted Easter characters straight from a kids’ story (read it here!): Mary Hoppins bunny, Kevin the Easter Chick, and luxurious gold-dusted eggs.

Bracegirdle’s (Clarence Gardens, McLaren Vale, Hahndorf and Blackwood)
Quirky Easter treats: chocolate egg cartons with chicks, “fried egg” lollipops, giant freckles, and surprise-filled bunnies.

Red Cacao (Stirling)
Boutique chocolatier with artisanal eggs, bunnies, bilbies, and lambs in tempting flavours perfect for all ages and tastes.

Melba’s Chocolate Factory (Woodside)
Handmade bilbies, colourful Easter bags with mini eggs, fruity treats, and fun cartons of speckled chocolate eggs.

Why buying SA is the best Easter hack

Shopping local isn’t just great for your tastebuds – it’s great for SA. Every local bun or Easter egg you buy supports jobs, small businesses, and the community.

And let’s be real – South Aussies know food. From world-class produce to top-tier chocolate and next-level hot cross buns, we do it best.

It’s why Brand SA – the champions behind that iconic red state brand logo – is making it easier than ever to spot and support local. With three fresh faces on its board, the mission to showcase SA’s best is only growing stronger:

  • Jennie Zeiher – Visual effects leader and Rising Sun Pictures President
  • Pauly Vandenbergh – AFL diversity advocate and director of Indigenous-owned Wanna Mar, Munda Wines, and the Tjindu Foundation
  • Kirsty Balnaves – Regional wine expert and Director at Balnaves of Coonawarra

This Easter, fill your basket with SA’s best – just look for the red “Buy SA. For SA.” logo. Your tastebuds (and your state) will thank you.
