Is your car rego up to date? How to avoid being $1500 out of pocket

Running late on your rego and driving an uninsured vehicle (many of us have been there) means big fines. Thankfully there’s a simple hack to save your future self from forgetting to renew … again.

Owning a car / caravan / motorcycle / trailer is fun and all, but there are so many things to stay on top of. Between booking in for services and keeping an eye on tyre pressure, to staying up to date with insurance and registration, the list is never ending. And expensive.

Forgetting to pay your rego means big fines – something none of us need when we are trying to balance cost-of-living pressures.

Thanks to recent improvements to mySAGOV, it is now simpler to automate your car registration with direct debit renewal and strike ‘check car rego asap’ off your life to do list.

If your registration is due to expire in less than four weeks, a one-month payment is needed upfront to start the process, with rego then paid monthly, quarterly or annually – it’s up to you.

Once everything is set up, you’ll get SMS and email reminders when your payment is due, so you can plan ahead and make sure enough funds are in your chosen account after your weekend splurge.

If the payment fails for whatever reason, you’ll be alerted one month before your rego expires, providing plenty of time to avoid a fine.

Once your rego’s renewed via direct debit, you’ll receive a message to your email or mobile number.

This initiative is part of the State Government’s ongoing commitment to provide services that are easier and more accessible to better meet the needs of all South Australians.

How to set up registration direct debit:

  1. If you don’t already have one, set up a mySAGOV account here.
  2. Log in to your mySAGOV account using your internet browser (not the mySAGOV app).
  3. Select Vehicle List / set up direct debit in the Vehicles sector (or select ‘Show me how’ in the direct debit prompt on your homepage).
  4. Select ‘Add to direct debit’ or the tick box alongside the plate number of the relevant vehicle.
  5. Select your ‘Payment method’ (you may need to add a new one).
  6. Select ‘ITC’ option, ‘Renewal period’ (eg one, three or twelve monthly) and a ‘CTP Insurer’.
  7. Select ‘Continue then ‘I agree’.
  8. Select ‘Finish’. Voila!

Find all the details about direct debit registration here. (You’re welcome!)
