Roads are always busier in school holidays – especially over Christmas and New Year. Here’s a quick quiz to check you’re up to speed with SA’s road rules, to help you stay safe this festive period.
School holidays are a notoriously busy time on our roads. There are more kids out and about during the day, families are rushing to different events and people are more likely to travel long distances.
Senior Sergeant Susan O’Connor, Program Coordinator at the Road Safety Centre, says it’s an important time of the year to remind people to take care while driving.
“Kids are out riding their bikes, people are out celebrating … it’s really important to be mindful of who’s out and about on the roads,” she says.
“It’s a busy time of year for everybody. Everyone’s worried about their Christmas presents, who’s coming for lunch, what food they need to pick up.
“But you really need to stay in the moment of driving and not be distracted by, not just your mobile phone, but everything else that’s going on in the car. Your attention really just needs to be on the road.”
Remember the Fatal Five
SSgt O’Connor says “pretty much every crash that occurs on our roads” is attributable to at least one of the Fatal Five – drink and drug driving, speeding, distraction, not wearing a seatbelt and dangerous driving.
“You need to know what your limits are. If you’re drinking, don’t drive. If you’re intending to drink, have an alternative way to get home,” she says.
SSgt O’Connor says it’s also important to remain up to date with the latest SA road rules, which do change over time.
“Something that you learned when you were 16 years ago, it may not be the case now.
“We have free road safety sessions here at the Road Safety Centre for all age demographics, from preschool through to older road users, where we can re-educate you on the latest changes to legislation.”
